Come Uganda Update

COME received one of the two 40 containers this week from Australia. In it was the ambulance, donated by St John in Perth, and other medical supplies donated by Mission World Aid (MWA) in Adelaide, Australia. MWA purchased the container, paid the freight to Mombasa, donated hospital beds and mattresses, linen, gowns, many knitted items for babies, and many other bits and pieces for use in the future HOPE Medical Centre at Lukwanga.

Sarah arrived this month to work with COME for a year. She will help with the COME community programs for disadvantaged children.Sarah has completed a 3 year ministry course, partly related to children's work, so will be able to impart skills to our people as well as assisting the children and parents in the community. The picture below shows the almost complete School chapel, which will also be used on Sundays as the childrens church. The building will accommodate up to 300 children, many of whom now help fill the main church on a Sunday morning.

Frank and the team recently went to a remote village in the centre of Uganda for a crusade. The picture below shows the team in action in front of the COME van. In the village there were 8 shops, and each one sold alcohol, so there were many drunkards in that place. Each evening of the crusade several drunken men would become Christians. By going forward publicly, they effectively made a statement that by becoming Christians they would give up the alcohol. Several were baptised in a nearby river and also attended the seminar where they gave testimonies about how alcohol had ruined their lives. One man said that previously, the money he made doing part time work would be spent drinking with his friends in the evenings. He said he was looking forward to saving that money to send his children to school and spending more time with his wife.

COME is planning a Leadership Conference for later this year where over 30 leaders will be gathered from different parts of Uganda for skills training and capacity building. They will stay at Lugala and attend the intensive 4 day conference where skills will be taught to enhance their leadership roles. We are seeking finances of $2,500 to cover the cost of the seminar.
